The first settlers of Pelican Rapids came in 1868. The settlers came to establish trading posts for the British Northwest Company. The company was interested in trading with the Chippewa Indians who also resided in the Pelican Rapids area. With the beautiful scenery that Pelican Rapids had to offer, it grew very quickly!
In 1963, Maple Wood State Park was opened and helped build the city's tourism industry. The park is absolutely beautiful, especially in the fall season. It is a must see if you are visiting or passing through the town. Don’t forget to stop and take a picture of the World’s Largest Pelican located at the base of Mill Pond dam. The statue was built in 1957 and stands fifteen and a half feet tall! The pelican is known as Pelican Pete and is a top tourist attraction for the small town.
According to the 2020 census, Pelican Rapids population is at 2,512. For such a small population the town has a ton to offer! The town has eight restaurants in town and a few outside of town. There is also a golf course located right in town known as Birchwood Golf Course, as well as a few other courses located outside of town.
