The town of Elbow Lake was platted way back in 1886. The town got its name from a nearby lake that was bent in the shape of an elbow. When the town was being formed, along with the neighboring towns in the county, there was discussion on where the courthouse should be. The options were Elbow Lake and Herman. This became a heated debate and in the end the courthouse was settled to be in Elbow Lake. Today, Elbow Lake still has the beautiful courthouse that is located at the end of main street.
In 1973, Elbow Lake formed a Sister City Organization where their sister city became Flekkefjord, Norway. In 1977, Elbow Lake began hosting their annual town festival called Flekkefest.
Elbow Lake has a strong farming community and many of their 1,166 residents either farm, work on a farm or have a job that relates to the farming community. If you are ever visiting Elbow Lake, be sure to check out the Hans House Cafe for breakfast or the Knotty Pine Bar and Grill for lunch or supper. If you are looking for something outdoors, check out Tipsinah Mounds Golf Course, Tipsinah Mounds Campground or the new splash pad at Veterans’ Park!
