Located in the northeast corner of Massachusetts, Georgetown is a quiet town known to most for its access to various major roadways, such as I-95, Route 97, and Route 133, and its network of trails located within the Georgetown-Rowley State Forest. Georgetown has many hidden gems within its 13.2 square miles that make it a town worth calling home. What is now mainly quaint and residential was once a town booming with industry, primarily with the shoe industry and small mills. An ode to the town’s shoe shop can be found within the Brocklebank Museum, a building built circa 1668, that also has ties to the Underground Railroad. Many buildings proudly display a historical building marker, four of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. One such listing, Georgetown Town Hall, is home to one of the most hotly contested, but prized, historical possessions; “Old Nancy,” a cannon from Revolutionary War times. What to most is an indiscriminate old war relic has been the subject of a 200-year harmless dispute between Georgetown and neighboring Rowley, both of whom claim to possess the real cannon. Georgetown is also home to Erie 4, the oldest privately owned and operated fire company in the country.
