The small town of Mountville SC is one of the many unincorporated communities located in southern part of Laurens County. Mountville is one of Laurens County’s earliest communities, as families began to settle along Beaverdam Creek in the early nineteenth century. According to Laurens County census records , Soloman Fuller relocated his family to Mountville and was considered the first settler of the town of Mountville. In 1808 a school and church were built in the community and more families established homesteads in the community. Late in the nineteenth century – the Georgia, Carolina and Northern Railroad built a railroad through the area towns and many families decided to relocate closer to depot where there was more commercial activity. Cotton Crops were prospering in the community bringing banks, stores, a post office and cotton gins in the area and the once rural town turned into one booming town.
When automobiles and the development of the highway system in the twentieth century – passenger railroad service was no longer available to the residents of Mountville and the economic boom eventually disappeared. When you drive through the small town of Mountville – you can still see the remnants of this once lively town – with old buildings – sitting beside the train tracks that once brought excitement to this small town.
