Incorporated in 1853 the town of Watertown (once known as Johnson’s Rapids) received its name after an influx of travelers originally from Watertown, New York decided to settle there. With a grain mill on the Rock River to provide its power, the settlers decided to build a road connecting Watertown to Milwaukee. This allowed Watertown to export wheat, barley, flour, corn, potatoes, and wood and to import merchandise, lumber, carriages, wagons, and other goods.
In 1855, Watertown was the second largest community in Wisconsin with a population of 8,500. With the large number of German immigrants settling in the area, a woman named Margarethe Schurz saw the need to start a kindergarten. Soon other community members wanted their children to attend Margarethe’s school so she expanded and moved to a small building in town which later became known as the first kindergarten in the United States.
