The town became a city in 1849 and remained that way until it split into two separate municipalities in 1965. The city of New Lisbon,, Wisconsin is still home to some of the most prominent citizens in the community today. The discovery of lead and zinc deposits led to the establishment of a mining community that became known as New Lisbon.
