In 1851 the village of Eagle Wisconsin was established when the southern branch of the Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad came through the town. It received its name when 3 settlers named Thomas Sugden, John Coats and William Garton came upon a large prairie. As they stood, admiring the site, they noticed a huge bald eagle soaring overhead. This is what gave them the inspiration to give it the name it is today.
Eagle was nearly renamed Diamond City when a diamond was discovered here in 1876. While digging a well at the summit of what is today called Diamond Hill, workers found a yellow pebble, which was eventually identified as one of the largest glacial diamonds ever found in the United States. The diamond ended up at New York’s American Museum of Natural History but unfortunately was stolen in 1964 along with several other gems, including the Star of India sapphire.
Over the years the village of Eagle with its fine natural springs became known for resorts like Eagle Springs and Paradise Springs. Unfortunately with the natural springs and other bodies of water in the area, threats of flooding during the spring and summer months can increase.
