Pembroke is a suburban neighborhood, based on population density, located in Virginia Beach. It is located around the intersections of Virginia Beach Boulevard and Independence Boulevard. The community’s name comes from Pembroke Manor, a plantation built in 1764. In March of 1966 Pembroke Mall, the first shopping mall in the Hampton Roads metro area, opened its doors with 21 stores. In December of 2021 the mall announced that the 48 remaining tenants must vacate by the end of January 2022, as a part of a $200 million redevelopment deal. The new development is scheduled to be completed in 2024 it will include a hotel, senior living, and apartments. In July of 2022 it was announced that the center will be renamed to Pembroke Square. Another notable structure is Princess Anne High School. It was opened in 1954, it is one of 11 high schools in the Virginia Beach Public School System, it is also the oldest remaining high school in Virginia Beach. Princess Anne High School is slated to be demolished following the completion of a replacement building which is anticipated to begin in 2023 and expected to be complete in 2028.
