Native Americans from the Ute and Shoshoni tribes first settled in the western Salt Lake Valley area. Welsh pioneers who came to Utah with Dan Jones in 1849 settled in the Granger area which got its name because of the community's successful farming. Granger merged with Hunter, Chesterfield and Redwood to become West Valley City in 1980.
