The Cedars is a sub-region of South Dallas, located just south of Downtown Dallas, across from Interstate-30. Some of the more well known landmarks are the Dallas Police Headquarters, the historic Dallas Heritage Village, Lee Harvey's Bar, the Ervay Theater and local craft brewery Four Corners Brewing.
The origin of The Cedars dates back to the 1870s known as a popular, fairly priced community but by the end of the 1900s it had become one of the most well-to-do spots in Dallas with large Victorian homes dotting the landscape. It was the known home of the local Jewish community with one of the more famous occupants being Stanley Marcus from the renowned department store Nieman-Marcus. Commercial buildings were also a staple in the region as one of the rival department stores Sears-Roebuck had a large warehouse presence there. That warehouse has since been remodeled to become the very hip Southside on Lamar lofts.
As the 1900s wore on, the population boom caused more people to move to northern parts of Dallas. In the recent past, the area has undergone a rejuvenation and become a cool spot for local musicians and artists. With this new growth has come renovated buildings and new townhouses and lofts while most of the original homes and buildings have disappeared.
Renovated buildings can be beautiful and pragmatic, however, keeping the bones of a structure while trying to add-in more complex and trendy features is trying to mix and match the new with the old.
