Tracy City is named after financier Samuel Franklin Tracy. It developed after coal was found, and railroad and mining interests spiked in 1840. The story behind how coal was discovered is that some local boys were digging a groundhog out of the ground and discovered coal in the process. In the 1870s an experimental furnace was built to see if the local coal could produce iron. On the third day of iron production the stovepipe fell. The furnace, named the “Fiery Gizzard”, had produced 15 tons of iron. The former location of the furnace is marked with a historical marker. Tracy City is also home to the Dutch Maid Bakery, which is the oldest family bakery in Tennessee. It was opened it 1902.
