Monteagle is situated in three different counties. It has long been a popular place to cross the Cumberland Plateau due to its location being on a narrow stretch of the plateau. The town was originally known as Moffat Station. It was named after John Moffat. He had purchased over 1,000 acres of land in the area in 1870. John donated 50acres to Fairmount College, a women's college that had decided to relocate to the area from Jackson, Mississippi. Dubose Conference Center is now located where the school once stood. The name of the town was changed to Monteagle by the time it was incorporated in 1962. There are a lot of travelers through the town each day thanks to Interstate 24 passing through close to the town center. In 1882 Monteagle Sunday School Assembly was established to train Sunday school teachers.
