Graysville is named for William Gray. He was an early settler that was appointed to the postmaster position in 1875. In the 1880s the Dayton Coal and Iron Company brought a major operation to Graysville that saw the town expand. The coal that was mined was turned into coke which was used to produce Pig Iron. This production was prevalent until the 1930s and the onset of the Great Depression. Graysville is situated between Walden Ridge and Blackoak Ridge just north of the Rhea-Hamilton County line.
