Dresden, TN is the county seat of Weakley County.  Dresden is the home of Tennessee’s 46th Governor Ned Ray McWherter. Ned Ray McWherter held office from January 1987 to January 1995. Before his governorship, he served as Speaker of the Tennessee House of Representatives from 1973 to 1987, the longest tenure as Speaker up to that time. Ned Ray was not only a politician but a businessman. When Ned Ray’s college athletic career was cut short, he joined the Martin Shoe Company as a salesman. The company’s sandal line struggled again under the competition from cheaper Japanese imports. Ned Ray traveled throughout the Caribbean and Central America in an attempt to find retailers and eventually found a market for the sandals in Puerto Rico. Ned Ray found Volunteer Distributing in 1964 to distribute Anheuser-Busch beer in the Weakley County area. Two years later he opened Dresden’s first nursing home. Ned Ray served 21 years in the Tennessee National Guard before retiring with the rank of captain. He is so well-loved by the Dresden community. They have a statue raised in his honor on the town square, along with a library named after him as well.
