Miami, located in Northeast Oklahoma and the Ottawa County seat with a population of approximately 13,000. Incorporated in 1891, in Oklahoma’s Indian Territory the town was founded through negotiations with the Miami Tribe, and the Department of the Interior. By 1918 the city was a booming mining town which tripled the population by 1920.
Located on Interstate-44 and Highway 69, Miami has become the third most tourist visited area only behind Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Historic Route 66 runs through the middle of town which is known as “Main Street”. Tourism has become a huge part of the community, with many Indian gaming facilities, Route 66 attractions, numerous art murals, and downtown Main Street lure visitors to Miami. When spring rolls around, fisherman line the banks of the Neosho River hoping to snag a spoonbill, sometimes called a paddlefish.
Miami is host to the Annual Route 66 Heritage Festival downtown. Food trucks, marketplace vendors, kids activities, corn hole tourney, Kansas City BBQ Society competition, and a beer garden is set for visitors and event attendees to enjoy over the weekend.
Rodeo Miami, a two-day rodeo event filled with exciting acts, vendors, and concessions. Suspense in the rodeo arena hangs in the air. Visitors and locals cheer for their favorite championship rodeo cowboys and girls as they compete in traditional rodeo events such as bronc riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, barrel racing and bull riding.
The American Cowboy Rodeo Association (ACRA) has named Rodeo Miami as Rodeo of the Year since 2010. The top 20 contestants in each event vote on the annual awards which are announced during the ACRA Finals held annually.
