History of Cumberland
Cumberland, Maine is a seacoast town located in the Mid Coast region of the state. It is known for its year round recreation and long history of industry. The first settlers arrived at the mouth of the Cobbosseecontee River around 1630 and shortly after filed land claims under Coverlet patents. The name Cumberland is believed to have been given to this area in 1741 by a group of soldiers who were stationed there after their defeat in the French and Indian War. Cumberland, Maine became a county in 1790 and its first city in 1849. It didn't become its own town until 1925 when Buxton and Standish were added to it.
