History of Taunton
Taunton is a city located in Massachusetts, just outside of Boston. It has a population of around 38,000 residents and is known for being a middle-class town with many blue collar jobs. Known as a historic and scenic town, Taunton has been home to several important events throughout history. Today it is home to multiple attractions including the Taunton Ironworks Museum (focusing on local industry and its rich industrial history), the new Taunton Green Park and Entertainment District (a five-acre public greenspace with multiple venues), the popular downtown Clocktower Marketplace -all offering convenient shopping options while visiting Taunton.
The first settlers in Taunton, Massachusetts were the Native American people who lived in Massachusetts for thousands of years. There is evidence that they worked metals and had settled into a community that was fairly stable. Centuries later, English settlers migrated from Plymouth Colony to build a village known as Wannamoisett. This village was incorporated in 1637 as Taunton Towne, named after the River Tauton (Tauntum). The town continued to grow over the next two hundred years by providing resources for its growing population. These settlers built gristmills, sawmills and fulling mills near present-day Taunton Green.
