During the Revolutionary War, it supported its own company of Minute Men. After the war, the town was known to be one of the hotbeds of dissension that lead to Shays Rebellion in 1786. Throughout its history Princeton has served as both the home to and inspiration of a number of famous artists. It is both the birthplace and burial site of Edward Savage, who was renowned for his portraits of George Washington. During a visit to Mt. Wachusett in 1842, Thoreau would be inspired by the mountain, and write, "who like me/standest alone without society."
