History of Mansfield
Mansfield, Massachusetts is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 23,375. Mansfield is located in the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor and its historic downtown center is included on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places as an historic district listed as the Mansfield Center Historic District. The nearest major airport is located in Worcester, Massachusetts. The weather in this area is generally very mild and temperate year-round. With 1,996 acres of parkland and 8 miles of trails through the nature center, hundreds of years of history will be brought to life before your eyes.
Mansfield, Massachusetts is one of America's oldest towns. Mansfield was first settled in 1652 as a region of Pequid Indians. The first settlers arrived in 1669 and established a town on the Woburn-Charlestown line. In 1693, the Massachusetts General Court incorporated Mansfield as a town with boundaries extending north to Marlborough and west to Grafton, Massachusett. The town is named after Sir Richard Mansfield, who was an officer in Oliver Cromwell's army during the English Civil War. Mansfield is home to many of our nation's historical events and places. The town was also home to the notorious Witch Trial of 1711.
