Longmeadow is located just south of Springfield and was first settled in 1644, and on October 17, 1783 was officially incorporated. Longmeadow brownstone was mined here in the 19th and early 20th centuries.Princeton UNiversity's Neo-Gothic library is one of the famous American buildings that were constructed of the Longmeadow brownstone material. The brownstone quarries portion of the town called the "East Village" split off in 1894 and become East Longmeadow. In 1922 Donald Ross designed the Longmeadow Country Club which Spalding Co. used as their proving ground for golf equipment designs.
