Located in the heart of Jefferson Parish, Metairie is one of the largest suburbs of New Orleans due to its close proximity. Metairie shares its parish borders with Orleans parish and Lake Pontchartrain. French settlers came to this area back in the 1720s and the area was then known as Tchoupitoulas. The city saw its most rapid growth in the 1940s after World War II.
Metairie is known for its many schools, churches, and shopping centers. The Lakeside Mall is the largest shopping center South of Baton Rouge. One of the reasons that Metairie stays so busy is its location between the city of New Orleans and the Louis Armstrong International Airport.
As with most cities in the Gulf South, Metairie deals with high humidity and heat during the Summer months, but a more relaxed Winter for the rest of the year.
