History of the City of Covington

Founded by New Orleans merchant John Wharton Collins in 1813, the city of Covington was originally named the Town of Wharton after John’s grandfather. Later in 1816, the city was formally incorporated and renamed Covington to honor War of 1812 hero General Leonard Covington. As the Northshore area began to grow, Covington become the hub for commerce, industry, and government. Covington’s early economy relied on transporting goods to and from New Orleans via the Bogue Falaya River.

Covington has grown into a charming historic Southern community with vibrant art, music, shopping, and dining experiences. Centered among three rivers, the city also offers residents and visitors numerous outdoor activities, such as paddleboarding and kayaking. From music and antique festivals to Covington’s Mardi Gras parades, Covington is one of the best cities on the Northshore to live, work, and play.
