Nestled under and atop the bluffs overlooking the great Mississippi River, Hickman has the charm and beauty of the South, but most of all Hickman is a river town filled with the genuine flavor of Mark Twain's "Mighty Mississippi". In fact, Twain once called Hickman, "The Most Beautiful Town On The Mississippi. The town was once called Mills Point, in honor of James Mills, who settled on a military grant in 1819. In 1837 the name of the settlement was changed to Hickman, the maiden name of the wife of G.W.L. Marr, who had once owned the town site among his extensive landholdings. The river trade helped make Hickman a thriving town. In 1845 some 2,000 bales of cotton and 3,000 hogsheads of tobacco were shipped from the community. In 1845, with a population of 350, Hickman was chosen as the county seat of Fulton County. A brick courthouse overlooking the Mississippi River was completed in 1848 at a cost of $4,000. Hickman's status as a port lessened because of deposits along the Mississippi River, which made navigation close to the town more difficult. Dredging of the river by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers helped to ensure that Hickman had a permanent harbor, and by the late 1960s river traffic increased. In the mid-1970s, improvements were made to the city's public cargo handling terminal, which was of major importance to the region.
This area was long occupied by various cultures of indigenous peoples. European-American settlement of this area did not begin until decades after the American Revolutionary War.
Two floods devastated Hickman, the first in 1912 and the second in 1913. The flood of 1912 began when a levee located near Hickman broke. Within a few hours, the water had risen to the roofs of houses. The flood of 1913 began when a levee near West Hickman broke on April 4.
The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. September, May, and October are the most pleasant months in Hickman, while January and December are the least comfortable months.
What our Hickman
customers are saying
Great work boys. My kitchen fire was a bad experience, but the help of SERVPRO made it bearable.
A tree fell on my roof and I had all kinds of problems! Water was coming in and leaking all over my stuff. Mike came out and the boys fixed up my roof. The ladies came in and cleaned my things. Back together like new!
Many thanks to the team! Respectful and honest.
Bad storm and damage to my home made easier with the help of SERVPRO of Paducah. The crew knew I was under stress and did their best to make things easier.
I've used SERVPRO of Paducah several times and the speed of their service is second to none!! They were truly responsive. Then dealing with the insurance company and the mortgage company wasn't the easiest, however SERVPRO of Paducah provided us with everything we needed in the most timely manner to get us squared away and get my family back in our home as quickly as possible.
