Brightwood was established in the 1870s. Founding members of the municipality included several merchants and manufacturers. Brightwood developed into a small town until its annexation by Indianapolis in 1897. In 1889 it housed nearly 4,900 residents. Brightwood was initially a thriving railroad center, that became home to many first-generation Americans born in Germany and Ireland. The Brightwood Community Center is a popular neighborhood facility. As well as nearby Martin University, which was founded in 1977. The neighborhood has five area parks. In 2006 a program called "Reviving the Sprit" was produced about the revitalization of the area, led by the determination of its residents.
