Home of the Western Illinois University Leathernecks, Macomb was named after General Alexander Macomb who served as a general in the war of 1812.  Macomb sits in the middle of McDonough County, and was founded as the county seat in 1830. Land grants in Macomb were given to war veterans and as railways made their way through the city, the population increased rapidly in the 1860s. Following the population boom, Western Illinois University was founded, then called the Western Illinois State Normal School.

Western Illinois University boasts multiple programs across 4 academic colleges with a focus on education studies, but the shining gem of the school is Leatherneck football. The nickname was coined in 1927 when the then athletic director, Ray “Rock” Hansen wanted to pay homage to his time as a Marine, and thus The Fighting Leathernecks, with its mascot of a purple and gold bulldog, were established.
