Kilauea is on Kauai's northeastern shore, bordered to the west by Kalihiwai and to the north by the Pacific Ocean. Route 56 passes through the south side of the community, leading west 7 miles to Hanalei and east 6 miles to the Moloaa area. Kilauea shares the name of the world-famous active volcano Kilauea on the big island of Hawaii. The name Kilauea translates to "spewing" or "much spreading" in the Hawaiian language.

Kilauea is most known for the historic 52-foot Kilauea Point Lighthouse. The structure was built in 1913 as a beacon for ships traveling along the north shore. Although its light was turned off in the 1970s and has been replaced by an automatic beacon, it still serves as one of the island's most visited attractions. The lighthouse is located within the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, a sanctuary for seabirds. Both professional and amateur photographers visit the area to capture once-in-a-lifetime pictures of birds in flight against the ocean backdrop.

This area was also once the location of the state’s largest guava plantation. Currently, the acreage is an path called the Wai Koa Loop Trail. Kauai Mini Golf is in the same area, where tourists can follow a botanical timeline of the island while enjoying a round of miniature golf.
