Some people believe that the community was named after Macedonia Baptist Church, which opened in the late 1870s. There was also an elementary school along Dock Lathem Trail (now closed) that went by the same name. Since the early 1990s, the Macedonia community has become a hotbed of suburban growth with a mix of residential and commercial development. Woodmont Country Club, containing over 950 residences and the neighborhood's first golf course (privately run), is one of Macedonia's newer developments. Most of the area's older residents don't live in housing subdivisions since the town has always been rural; some still own large farmlands in the area. In the last two decades or so, many commercial businesses and recreation areas have cropped up, such as Kroger and Cherokee Veterans Park.
