The name "Free Home" was established by Captain Delevan Lively, who owned land close to the Crossroads Militia District in Cherokee County. Many people were struggling and could not afford to purchase land during this time. If someone made a pledge that they would leave the property for him if they moved, he offered free land to anyone willing to build on it. This is how the community got its name, Free Home.
Since the late 1990s, the rural area has experienced moderate suburbanization.
