There are towns and cities named “Valparaiso” in Chile, Granada, the United States, Columbia, Mexico, Canada, Spain, and Brazil. This one – Valparaiso, Florida – is one of three (d) in the United States (at least three that we could find online). It is in Okaloosa County on the state’s western panhandle, part of the Fort Walton Beach–Crestview–Destin Metropolitan Statistical Area. Florida’s Valparaiso was named for the one in Indiana, which was named for the one in Chile.
A business developer from Chicago, James E. Plew, relocated to the Florida Panhandle in 1922; he saw Valparaiso as a great area for development, so he started turning the wildlife into a city/town. Plew founded the Bank of Valparaiso, built the Valparaiso Inn in 1924, and then organized the Chicago Country Club, which then built the Valparaiso Country Club golf course.
In 1934, Plew leased land to the U.S government for military use – the land became the Valparaiso Bombing and Gunnery Base, which was activated on June 14, 1935. It eventually became the Eglin Air Force Base. The original airport code (VPS) was assigned when it was Valparaiso; the Destin-Fort Walton Beach airport now has that code.
