Hinkley is a community in the Mojave Desert, in San Bernardino County, California. It is just north of California State Route 58, and about 120 miles from Los Angeles. Closer cities are Barstow, Mojave, and Victorville.  

The Mojave Desert, which was named for the indigenous Mojave people, is mostly southeastern California and southwestern Nevada, with small portions extending into Arizona and Utah. The Mojave is the smallest and driest of the four deserts that comprise the North American Desert; the others are the Sonoran, Chihuahuan, and Great Basin deserts.   

The warm temperate climate distinguishes the Mojave from its neighbors. This climate promotes the growth of plants that the other deserts do not have, such as ironwood (Olneya tesota), blue Palo Verde (Parkinsonia florida), chuparosa (Justicia californica), spiny menodora (Menodora spinescens), desert senna (Cassia armata), California dalea (Psorothamnus arborescens), and goldenhead (Acamptopappus shockleyi).  

It is best known as the site of Death Valley, which is the lowest elevation in North America. The Mojave Desert is often colloquially called the "high desert", as most of it lies between 2,000 and 4,000 feet.
