Fremont is a small village in Waupaca County approximately 30 minutes west of the Appleton/Oshkosh area. Like much of the Fox Valley it was home to the Menominee and Potawatomi Indians. It was ceded to the United States in 1836 as part of the Treaty of the Cedars. Following the cession, Fremont was first settled in 1849, and the village of Fremont was organized in 1888. Today it is known its unspoiled natural beauty and is a popular destination for water sports and outdoor recreation.
Many people refer to Fremont as the White Bass Capital of the world. According to Wikipedia, “the Wolf River flows through the middle of the village, with Partridge Lake just upriver. A spawning run of white bass, or sand bass (Morone chrysops), not to be confused with its larger cousin the “striped bass”, occurs twice a year – in May around Mother’s Day and in late September to early October. Lake sturgeon from Lake Winnebago travel upriver to the Fremont area in spring to spawn. One of the best-known businesses in Fremont is the Union Star Cheese Factory, a cheese factory that opened in 1906. They make a wide variety of cheeses from hard and soft cheeses to curds and strings. They give approximately 30-minute free factory tours at 8:00 am on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
