This plantation was established in 1714, with the still standing mansion being built in the 1730s and 1740s. When the original owners of the home passed away their long-time friend Peter Jefferson and cousin Jane Jefferson moved onto the property to take care of the children left behind, bringing along their children including none other than Thomas Jefferson. It was in the one-room schoolhouse on this plantation, that Thomas Jefferson received his first education, and spent many of the formative years of his youth. Today, you can visit and get a guided tour of the property and main house, or just wander the grounds and gardens on your own. While Central Virginia is steeped in our nation’s history, there are many other fun things to do in Tuckahoe, such as taking a trip to the James River for some fishing or just to enjoy the weather along its many public accesses. Tuckahoe is also home to many parks such as Robious Landing, Cheswick, and the Huguenot Flatwater Park which is part of the James River Parks System.
