Located in Portsmouth, Virginia, just south of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, the community of Cradock got its start in 1918 during the First World War. During the war, Portsmouth was unprepared for the large influx of workers coming to the Naval Shipyard, and the United States Housing Corporation was tasked with building houses for these workers. Cradock was one of the first federally funded planned communities in the United States. Today, part of the area is now known as the Cradock Historic District and is part of the National Register of Historic Places.

Being located in the Chesapeake Bay area, Cradock is no stranger to severe weather events.
