The history of West University Place, Texas goes back nearly 100 years. It began when a group of settlers moved to the area and decided they wanted to create a town. These settlers came from Germany and Poland in the late 1800s, seeking freedom from religious persecution. The first settlers were wealthy families who wanted to escape city life, so they bought large lots near Rice University and built large homes where they could live happily ever after in the fresh air. West University Place later became known as "Prune Valley" due to the many prune orchards that dotted the landscape during its early years.
