Garland is a city located in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and is home to about 240,000 people. The city has experienced significant growth in recent years due to its proximity to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and its position as an intermodal transportation hub. The area surrounding Garland has also been designated as a "Smart Growth Community" by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Garland's weather can be described as hot and humid during springtime, while it remains mild throughout the fall and winter months. The average annual temperature is 71 degrees Fahrenheit, with an average annual snowfall of just 4 inches (10 cm).
History of South Garland, TX
The area was developed around the Santa Fe Railroad depot. It initially started as two different communities— Embree and Duck Creek— who began a rivalry surrounding the railroad depot and the post office location. In 1887, the post office location was moved in between the two towns, and this area was named Garland after US Attorney General Augustus Hill Garland.
All of the communities around the new Garland eventually combined and joined the city of Garland which was incorporated in 1891.
