Powderly, Texas is located on U.S. Highway 271, only five miles from the Oklahoma and the Red River border. Originally the small township was known as “Lenoir” while settlers were inhabiting the area around the time of the Civil War, but the town was renamed Powderly in the 1880s when the St. Louis – San Francisco Railway was built nearby. Despite a generally small population of 1,178 residents, Powderly serves the community with businesses, schools, churches, and a post office. It also offers Camp Maxey Texas Army National Guard training facility along the southwest side of the city, originally a World War II infantry training camp, but now a popular recreational facility for locals and visitors. Centered on the Pat Mayse Lake Project, Camp Maxey offers activities for all ages, such as boating, camping, swimming, fishing, and many more.
