Italy Cleanup and Restoration

The city of Italy, Texas, self-proclaimed The Biggest Little City in Texas, is located on the Blackland Prairie in southwestern Ellis County, 15 miles south of Waxahachie. The city was founded in 1879 by colonizers who found the land suitable for growing cotton, corn, sweet potatoes, and wheat. The town has no connection to the country of Italy, but, was given its name in 1880 by a postmaster who had visited the European country and compared its climate to that of this Texas countryside. While the residents of Italy, Texas might enjoy basking in an environment reminiscent of golden Tuscany sunshine, they are not immune to the occasional disruption that requires the talents of SERVPRO’s IICRC-certified technicians. This little city is of particular interest to Texas history buffs. A long-time Italy resident, Elmirine Allen Bell, led efforts to restore the Colored City Hall building that shuttered in 1965. The building was constructed in 1953 to provide a meeting place for the black city council until the building became obsolete in 1965. Residents hope to have this building ready soon to install the historic marker granted by the Texas Historical Commission and provide a museum to share the rich history of the black community and its progress in the mid 1900’s.
