It's located within the Lake Highlands neighborhood that constitutes much of north Dallas. Between the bombing of several black homes in south Dallas in 1950 and the demolition of many black neighborhoods to expand the Love Field airport in 1953, Dallas was in desperate need of black housing.

The development of Hamilton Park is just what the city needed. In May of 1954, the neighborhood was opened to residents, and it was completed in 1961. The neighborhood opened with a shopping center, a park, a school, single family homes and apartment complexes.
