History of Garland, TX
The area around the Santa Fe Railroad depot became a developing community known as Embree and Duck Creek. The two communities began competing with one another over the location of the post office and the railroad depot, which prompted them to combine into one town. In 1887, the post office was moved between the two towns, and this area became known as Garland after US Attorney General Augustus Hill Garland.
The citizens of several communities that were later annexed by Garland voted to join their neighboring city in 1891.
