Seven miles southeast of Austin in Travis County, is the Colton neighborhood. In 1886 it was established by the McKenzie family. At first the area was known as Cotton; this was in reference to the community's staple crop. The name was changed to Colton when the local post office opened in 1897. At that time, Colton there were ten to fifteen residents and a small store. As time went on the neighborhood grew, sort of, Colton had twenty-five residents in 1933 and fifty in 1939.
