Since Clarksville’s first settler James Clark in 1833 the town’s population has fluctuated but is home to more than 2,800 residents currently. After an act of the Texas Congress in 1837, Clarksville was incorporated as a town and became known as agricultural and educational centers. Before the Civil War, Retired Reverend John W.P. McKenzie opened the largest institution for higher education during the 1850s called the Makenzie College, but was permanently closed in 1868. Located less than 70 miles from Texarkana Regional Airport, this Red River County town has many attractions for tourists and locals year-round. Offering events such as Clarksville’s Fine Art Festival held in June, and the Tandem Bike Ride and Red River County Historical Society’s Annual Fall Bazaar held in October in the downtown square. The beautifully, revitalized downtown, Clarksville Square, is considered a historic site and has been a Main Street City since 2003.
