Tucked away on a mountain top you will find the city of Spencer. The city is named after Thomas Sharp Spencer. He was a long hunter that passed through the area in the mid-18th century. Due to his size and towering presence he was given the nickname of “Bigfoot”. The town was established in 1850 and incorporated in 1909. From 1848 to 1939 Spencer was home to Burritt College. The college eventually covered 25 acres. Some of the classes that were available included Latin, French, and German.
