Shelbyville is the county seat of Bedford County Tennessee and is home to 23,743 residents according to the 2021 census. Shelbyville sits on the Highland Rim above the Duck River on a limestone bluff. The Duck River flows around the southern and eastern borders of the town. Shelbyville is also known by the nicknames "the Walking Horse Capitol of the World" and "The Pencil City".

In the 1900's Shelbyville became home to many wood-cased pencil manufacturers. From the National Pen Company to the U.S. Pencil and Stationary Company, and now even Sharpie, many of the top producers of writing utensils have called Shelbyville, TN home. With that in mind, Shelbyville also was home to the world's longest pencil ever produced in 1991. With the pencil manufacturing businesses flourishing, many companies have since moved in to call Shelbyville home. On the opposite side of the spectrum, Shelbyville has also become one of the biggest homes for livestock as well, particularly the Tennessee Walking Horse. Every year, thousands of people come to Shelbyville for the 11 days and nights prior to the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration in which a breed World Grand Champion and 20 World Champions will be named the best of the best in the World Champion Tennessee Walking Celebration.
