History of Powell

Powell became a town in 1913. The first settlers to Powell, Tennessee came from North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee. Early settlers in the Powell area were of Scotch-Irish descent. The town was originally called "The Valley" because it was settled in a valley between two hills. It was later changed to "Diamond Groove" because of its location on the Diamond Grove Railroad from Nashville to Chattanooga. In 1886 the name of Diamond Groove was changed to Powell after Dr. Elisha S. Powell, who moved here in 1855."
