Pinson, TN is an unincorporated community located in Madison County along Highway 45, just a few miles south of Jackson. Discovered in 1820, as a result of a group of surveyors stumbling upon a Middle Woodland period platform mound, Mount Pinson was named after one of the men in the group, Joel Pinson. This mound, and the 16 others around it, would soon become the home of the Pinson Mounds State Archaeological Park. Years passed and the community was thriving, opening their own school in 1867, which was home to country music singer Eddy Arnold where he would perform locally in his early years, until 1956 when it was consolidated into South Side High School with other schools in the area. After this, local citizens started to convince the state to purchase this land to preserve it. Then, in 1974, Pinson Mounds was officially a Tennessee State Park and the largest Native American Middle Woodland Period mound group in the United States.
