Ooltewah, Tennessee is a small town in the Great Smoky Mountains of the USA. Ooltewah is located between Chattanooga and Gatlinburg, on US Highway 411. History of Ooltewah
For a while, Ooltewah was the county seat for James County, but that county went bankrupt in 1919 and was incorporated into Hamilton County shortly after. The former James County Courthouse is a major landmark in the town of Ooltewah. Ooltewah played a major role in the Civil War with the 4th Michigan Cavalry even capturing enemies in Ooltewah. It is believed the name Ooltewah was derived from a Cherokee cognate of the Muscogee word "italwa" that means "principal ground." Many locals believe the name is translated to "Owls Nest" or "Owls Roost."
