New Hope is a small town that got its name from a local church and cemetery. It is located on the Tennessee River on the Alabama and Tennessee state line. The town incorporated in 1974 to avoid an annexation attempt by South Pittsburg. Nickajack Dam is located on the eastern edge of New Hope on the Tennessee River. It generates hydroelectric power through four generating units. New Hope is the antagonist’s hometown in Carlisle Floyd’s “Susannah”. It is an opera centered on the main character, Susannah Polk.
