Kingsport, Tennessee is in Sullivan County. Kingsport was originally inhabited by the Cherokee Indians. It was first chartered in 1822 and became a major shipping port on the Holston River. The city was named after William King, who constructed a boat yard along the river. It was re-chartered in 1917 and was designed as a garden city by John Nolen of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The name "Kingsport" is a simplification of "King's Port", originally referring to the area on the Holston River known as King's Boat Yard, the head of navigation for the Tennessee Valley. Once a 500 acre farm where Mr. Brooks raised his championship Black Angus cows and blue-ribbon walking horses, Allandale is now an exciting part of Kingsport’s civic and social life.
