History of Hopewell

The history of Hopewell can be traced back to Native Americans who depended on the land for their livelihoods. European settlers made way to this area in the 1820s. It is believed this area was named "Hopewell" because the first church and post office in Bradley County were built here and the settlers would say "I hope they do well." Candies Creek flows through Hopewell and the originally settlers, the Cherokees, called this creek the "Little Kiuka Creek." Candies Creek came from the name Henry Candy, a Cherokee who had his home located along the creek for years.
