Greutli-Laager is a combination of two communities. Greutli was founded by German-speaking Swiss immigrants in 1869. It was part of an initiative to establish Swiss colonies on the Cumberland Plateau. The organization that started the community was known as the Tennessee Kolonisation Gesellschaft. Over 100 Swiss families moved to the area in the 1870s. Greutli was most likely named after a commune in Switzerland. Laager was originally known as Henley’s Switch. It was established as a railroad stopover in 1918. The two communities merged and incorporated in 1980. The community holds a Swiss Heritage Celebration each Summer at the historic Stoker-Stampfli Farm and Museum.
